Uniting theory and practice: practical welding class delights EGI students

May 28, 2024

Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) is an area with an important practical and applied aspect. Therefore, the practical classes of the curricular units play a crucial role in the training of future engineers and industrial managers.

In this sense, as every year, in the Mechanical Technology curricular unit, the first year students of the EGI degree had a practical welding class, held in a section of the Pilot Industrial Unit (UIP), guided and monitored by engineer João Lucas and supervised by the head of the course, Professor José Oliveira Santos.

In the practical class, the students had the opportunity to consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired in class, experiencing in practice the mastery of metal joining techniques and, through this, understanding the physical and metallurgical principles of welding, acquiring the manual dexterity and motor coordination necessary for the activity and, above all, developing the need for self-care and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The students were enthusiastic and motivated by the opportunity to combine theory with practice and the prospect of “getting their hands dirty”:

“[...] it was a different class from the usual ones, extremely enriching and interesting. We had the opportunity to carry out different types of welding and we were amazed and enthusiastic about the possibility of combining theory with practice” (Arisha Afzal, 1st year EGI student).

The EGI team would like to thank engineer João Lucas for his attention and valuable collaboration.
